Towards “global zero”: the role of the Holy See in the campaign on nuclear disarmament
2019
On 7 July 2017 at the UN headquarters in New York the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted, the first multilateral legally-binding instrument for nuclear disarmament negotiated in the last twenty years. The very signing of the Treaty must be seen as an extraordinary achievement because it represents a historic step in the seven decades long debate on nuclear weapons. One of the most significant achievements of the decade-long campaign is the engagement of civil society and non-state actors to such a degree that it was recognized through the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The crucial supporter of the cam…
Attitudes concerning nuclear war in finland and in the united states
1986
Four hundred seventy residents of Ridgewood, New Jersey, and 493 residents of Jyvaskyla, Finland, were randomly selected and interviewed about their attitudes concerning nuclear war. In both areas, a high proportion of the samples believed that some kind of nuclear incident is likely in the next decade. The vast majority stated that a nuclear war could not be won and that they expected to die in the event of war. About three fourths in both communities seldom discuss nuclear issues with anyone including their own children, and only one fourth of the U.S sample and about one half of the Finnish sample have ever done anything personally to oppose the arms race. About one half of the Americans…
Is cancer risk of radiation workers larger than expected?
2009
Occupational exposures to ionising radiation mainly occur at low-dose rates and may accumulate effective doses of up to several hundred milligray. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the evidence of cancer risks from such low-dose-rate, moderate-dose (LDRMD) exposures. Our literature search for primary epidemiological studies on cancer incidence and mortality risks from LDRMD exposures included publications from 2002 to 2007, and an update of the UK National Registry for Radiation Workers study. For each (LDRMD) study we calculated the risk for the same types of cancer among the atomic bomb survivors with the same gender proportion and matched quantities for dose, mean age att…
Ultra-high resolution mass separator—Application to detection of nuclear weapons tests
2009
Abstract A Penning trap-based purification process having a resolution of about 1 ppm is reported. In this context, we present for the first time a production method for the most complicated and crucially important nuclear weapons test signature, 133mXe. These pure xenon samples are required by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization to standardize and calibrate the worldwide network of xenon detectors.
Flaws in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons as shown by Marshall Islands v. United Kingdom, Marshall Islands v. Pakistan, Marshal…
2020
The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) amongst its goals included both non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and nuclear disarmament. The cases Marshall Islands v. United Kingdom, Marshall Islands v. Pakistan, Marshall Islands v. India show that nuclear disarmament remains an unresolved issue. These cases refer to Article VI of NPT as being breached, and allege that the NPT can be considered to be customary international law. Furthermore, nuclear non-proliferation obligation has been fulfilled, however the obligation of nuclear disarmament has not been fulfilled. The Marshall Islands cases present three significant flaws in the NPT. The first flaw which is the ambiguous…
External drivers of EU differentiated cooperation: How change in the nuclear nonproliferation regime affects member states alignment
2023
Since its establishment, the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) has strived to increase convergence among EU member states. Yet, convergence remains elusive and scholars have started to explain the emergence of differentiated cooperation resulting from multiple internal EU crises. We posit that the convergence in the EU member states with respect to nuclear weapons has been fundamentally altered by the humanitarian turn to nuclear disarmament. This has led to a crystallization of differentiated subgroups among the member states, whose membership coincides with that of informal groupings active in the broader nuclear nonproliferation regime. Combining quantitative data on resolution s…
Between idealism and realism: the global governance of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament
2014
Why has it not yet been possible to bring the nuclear weapons regime to an end and why are prospects about a nuclear weapon free future so bleak? In this thesis, I analyze both the achievements and failures concerning the global governance of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. In the first chapter, I outline key terms and concepts as well as the historical backgrounds, which are essential for understanding the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the global governance of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. In the second chapter, I examine the efforts on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament of four global key actors within the United Nations family: the General Assembly, …
Okręty podwodne typu Vanguard jako podstawa brytyjskiego systemu odstraszania militarnego w XXI wieku
2016
